Bit of History:
In 1714 British Parliament passed the Longitude Act and established new Longitude Board consisting of 24 Commissioners who encouraged research and gave very large prize for the solution to the issue of finding the Longitude. Many attempts were made by horologists and astronomers to solve the longitude problem, including C.Huygens, John Harrison, who actually designed a chronometer that made possible viable assessment of the longitude of a ship at sea.
In 1765 Larcum Kendall was appointed to the Board of Longitude as an expert and was commissioned to make a marine chronometer, later known as the K1. He finished it in 1769 and gave it to Captain James Cook during his famous second Voyage of Discovery on HMS Resolution, for which he received a famous praise: "my trusted friend".
